event: Detention and Yarls Wood

Detention 101: During the asylum process, if you are waiting for an appeal, or if your first application has been refused, or you are awaiting deportation, you are detained in what is called an immigration removal centre – they run and fulfil a similar function to prisons. There are around a dozen around the UK.

The women’s centre, Yarls Wood, like the other IRC are privatised. Guards have been known to physically and sexually abuse the women. They have stopped women from wearing t-shirts with slogans such as ‘Freedom’, they put them in solitary confinement. People in IRC can work for £1 an hour, doing maintenance jobs. Many are not able to do so. Inhumane, degrading, racist. This must end.

This Saturday we will be there, with MfJ. Join us and help‪#‎shutdownyarlswood‬ https://www.thunderclap.it/projects/34035-shutdownyarlswood
