What’s in a number?
As of a few months ago 1,518 deaths in police custody since 1990
Today 1,532 deaths at the hands of the state since 1990 in England and Wales.
That’s more than 3,000 deaths at the hands of the state since 1969
As of a few days ago +1 victim of this ruthless state, an 84 year old man who died handcuffed in the immigration detention process.
These figures do not account for the Sheku Bayos and others murdered in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
The numbers are as empty signifiers as they are full reminders of the violence of the state.
There are so, so * so * many of us that the police does not protect but rather violates, brutalises and murders with impunity. Let us be enraged together this Saturday. Let us make this Saturday and the next the beginning of something new, something different.
No Justice? No peace.
